I’m so excited to share this guest post today about using scripture to give yoga a Christian twist. Thanks to Jennifer Moye over at Holy Yoga for sharing!
I often share with others that being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life. In that same breath, I tell them how being a mom is one of the hardest journeys I have ever walked. Momin’ is hard! But you already know that don’t you?
As a military wife and a mom of three rambunctious little boy, I am always on the lookout for something that will help me lead my children to God and help us build our family time together.
Several years ago I found myself in a season of life that was just simply exhausting. I was tired all the time. My body ached from chronic fatigue and pain. While my kids were (and still are) a joy in my life, the toll of motherhood weighed so heavy on me. It was during this time that God brought something into my life in a most unexpected way.
A friend introduced me to this thing called Holy Yoga. I had tried traditional yoga before and while I understood the physical benefits, I simply couldn’t get into it. There was something not quite fitting in traditional yoga, and I quickly came to discover the missing link was Jesus.
Holy Yoga is the intentional practice of connecting our entire being; body, mind, and spirit with God. I discovered a way to find rest and much needed quiet stillness through this new practice of Holy Yoga. This new practice took all the benefits that traditional yoga had to offer and paired it with worship music, Scripture, and time with the Lord. It was a beautiful way to deepen my relationship with Jesus and find the rest I so desperately craved. Through this new practice I was learning what it meant to live out Luke 10:27 in a very real way.
Once I began to learn more about Holy Yoga I discovered an incredible program they have called Kids Holy Yoga. This has been a game changer in our family. Kids Holy Yoga is something we do almost every day together as a family. Sometimes it’s silly and sometimes it helps us get still – but it always brings us together and points us to Jesus. This new activity teaching my kids how to spend time in Scripture and with the Lord, all while getting some good exercise and learning to use our breath to help us focus and settle down.
One of the greatest benefits the addition of Kids Holy Yoga has given to our family is how it is helping our children calm themselves down when they are angry. After a few weeks of streaming the Kids classes via Holy Yoga TV, I found my 5 year old sitting in the floor after getting really angry with his brother (classic sibling stuff). He was sitting in his room, taking deep and slow breaths. I asked him what he was doing, and he responded “I’m slowing my breath down so I can be calm and I’m asking Jesus to help me be nice”. He is a super anxious kid sometimes, and I was just amazed that he was already learning how to settle himself AND ask for God’s help!
Holy Yoga has many programs available for people from all walks of life. They offer a world class instructor training programs as well as trainings for people who just want to improve their own yoga practice. One of my favorite things is the Holy Yoga TV which is like the Netflix for Holy Yoga. You can stream tons of classes right to your device and they even give you a free trial period. This is where we started in our family. They also have trainings for Kids Holy Yoga, Pre/Postnatal, Trauma Sensitive, Therapy, and so many more.
If you are looking for a way to connect your family to God in a new and effective way I encourage you to look into Holy Yoga. There isn’t anything that brings more refreshment to a mother’s heart that to watch her children run to Jesus! I pray you find this resource as impactful for your family as it has been for mine.
