12 Reasons You Should Learn to Study the Bible

12 Reasons You Should Learn How to Study the Bible

April 2, 2019

Do you wonder why you should learn to study the Bible? It isn’t enough for your spiritual growth for you to skim a chapter once in a while and coast from sermon to sermon. Here are 12 reasons you should learn to study the Bible.

You Can Test the Things You Are Taught

When you know how to study the Bible, you can spot when someone is using a verse out of context. You can see when a teacher is perverting a verse to say something other than what the context indicates. The teachings of the world often sound good; “follow your heart,” “live your best life.” But you will know better. When someone tells you to follow your heart, you will remember that “the heart is deceitful.” If someone suggests that you live your best life, you will remember that Jesus sacrificed his.

No one will pull the wool over your eyes in a motivational book or speaker. You are after the meat. The real deal is all that is good enough, because you friend serve the King.

You Can Feed Yourself

Paul urges the Corinthian church to grow up and get themselves ready to eat something more than milk. When an infant’s belly is full of milk they are sleepy and ready for a nap. Learn to study the Bible so that you can be ready to run the race instead of sleeping from Sunday to Sunday when you have your bottle at church.

You Can Study Any Passage

Have you ever wished that your pastor would preach through a certain book of the Bible? Well, learn to study it yourself! Learn to handle the Word of God so that you can pick up the Bible and dig for what God has laid on your heart.

You Can Withstand Trial

The nature of this life is trials. When one ends, many times another one has already begun. But with the Bible in hand you can meet them. You will overcome through God’s strength instead of your own. His comfort will sustain where your resolve has failed.

You Can Have God’s Guidance in Your Life Decisions

Life is hard, but God has given us help. The Bible may not tell you what college your child should go to or which house to buy, but it tells us an awful lot! The Bible is full of wisdom and direction. It proves that the nature of man does not change. The heart of man has not gotten more evil and the Bible tells us how to overcome it.

You Can See That it is Perfect

Psalm 19 tells us that God’s law is absolutely perfect. If fact, it would be a great chapter to study if you need a place to start!

It revives your soul.

I can tell you from experience that on the dark days when you recall a verse that comforts you, it revives. It is like a drink of cold water on a hot day. Even this morning I recalled the words of Psalm 121 as I struggled with how to handle a situation. God knows what to do and he will guide me with his Spirit and his Word.

It makes the simple, wise.

Anyone can have wisdom if they ask God for it. His Word is a treasure trove of wisdom for anyone who wants it. Take it friend! Ask him for wisdom, and then immerse yourself in the Word.

Its precepts are right.

The Bible works. Following it will not guarantee you earthly success, but it will guarantee that you are in the center of God’s will. This is why I pray that my kids will have a love for the Bible. If they are in his Word, they will be in his will.

Its commands are pure.

Unlike the ulterior motives of man, God wants the best for us. His commands are designed with one purpose. To show the way back to him. This is not for a power play or to exercise control over us that he gives his commands. It is because as our loving Father he wants the best for us.

It gives us a clean fear of God.

The Bible shows us how we should act towards God. It reveals his authority, glory and perfect character. When we desire for our hearts to reflect him it shows us what that looks like.

Its rules are true.

You can count on the Bible to give you good rules to follow. They have stood the test of time. However you cannot follow rules that you don’t know. Your heart can’t be directed in precepts that you haven’t learned.

You are so right! I love what you have to say about being able to test what you’re taught and to discern the truth. There’s no way to recognize the truth unless you know the Word.

Yes, it is the only way, and so necessary. There are so many claiming to have the truth.

Love all the reasons to study God’s Word, Danell. Especially the first one! My husband, a pastor, has always said we need to be in the Bible for ourselves. I never want to rely only on great sermons or podcasts, but to let the Lord reveal His truth to me and hide it deep in my heart. And I like how you practically applied this to our lives. So many of God’s promises help me, give me direction, and so on.

Testing the things you are taught <— THAT is so important! We realized it's importance when our kids started going off to college. We realized that they needed to know WHAT they believed, but equally as important, WHY they believed. Daddy and momma's faith is NOT going to get you into heaven. The faith needs to be your own. And if your kids go off to college (especially secular college) or even out into the world, and they don't know the what and why… the world will fill their heads with its own what and why! Great post Danell! Thanks for linking up at InstaEncouragements!

This is so important. Studies show that the first six months after a child goes to college determine whether they will stay in church or leave. Our time as parents while they live at home is so precious and fleeting!

Excellent post! God’s Word is such a treasure for our souls, our lives, our hearts and our minds. But you made plain the powerful reasons we need to make it our own treasure. Not hearing about this treasure from others. Bless you and your ministry, Dannell!
